Det er snart 1,5 måned siden, at jeg (igen) kom hjem fra Vietnam og her på en kold januardag, kan jeg godt savne at sidde i varmen og sippe eksotiske cocktails. I Ho Chi Minh City findes der ikke kun lokale gadekøkkener og trafikkaos, der findes også en lidt mere skjult side af byen, der bl.a. byder på natklubber og cocktailbare, som du ikke troede eksisterede andre steder end i London og New York.
I dag vil jeg dele min tips til, hvor du skal drikke din eftermiddagscocktail – og hvor du skal drikke den når mørket falder på og musikken tændes.
English: It is almost one and a half month since I (again) returned from Vietnam and here on a cold January day, I really miss sitting in warmer weather and sipping exotic cocktails. In Ho Chi Minh City, there are not only local street kitchens and traffic jams, there is also a slightly more hidden side of the city, which includes exclusive nightclubs and cocktail bars that you didn’t think existed anywhere els than London and New York.
Today I want to share my tips on where to drink your afternoon cocktail – and where to drink your cocktails at night.
5 O’Clock follies – Rex Hotel

De fleste kender udtrykket ‘5 C’Clock cocktail’ der referere til, at klokken 5 altid er en undskyldning for at drikke en cocktail. Udtrykket opstod oprindeligt under Vietnamkrigen, hvor de amerikanske og britiske journalister mødtes med repræsentanter fra det amerikanske militær for at få seneste opdateringer på krigen. Det skete hver dag kl. 17.00 på Rex Hotel i Ho Chi Minh City.
Journalisterne opdagede hurtigt, at den information de fik på møderne ofte ikke var lig med sandheden og derfor blev det hurtigt underforstået, at man i stedet mødtes til møderne for at drikke drinks og hører på ‘follies’ som strammer fra ordet ‘foolishness’ og vel bedst kan oversættes til “mangel på god forstand.”
I dag er Rex Hotel stadig et flot hotel og man fornemmer hurtigt historiens vingesur. når man besøger deres tagterrasse. På væggene hænger gamle billeder, fra den gang Rex Hotel var mødested for de internationale journalister – og byens højeste bygning, hvilket er svært at forestille sig, når man besøger byen i dag. Det er en god ide at besøge hoteller fra omkring kl. 16 eller 17 inden det bliver mørkt.
Deres drinks koster lidt mere end andre steder i byen, men i forhold til danske priser er det stadig overkommeligt og bestemt det hele værd.
English: Most people know the term ‘5 C’Clock cocktail’ that refers to the fact that 5 pm always is an excuse to drink a cocktail. The term originally emerged during the Vietnam War, where US and British journalists met with US military representatives to get the latest war updates. It happened every day at. 17:00 at the Rex Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City.
The journalists soon discovered that the information they received at the meetings was often not valuable and in line with the truth and therefore the journalists started to attend the meeting not for the information, but to have drinks and listen to ‘follies’ that comes from the word ‘foolishness.’
Today, the Rex Hotel is still a nice hotel and you diffidently still feel the special atmosphere when visiting their roof terrace. Old pictures are hanging on the walls, from the time Rex Hotel was the meeting place for the international journalists – and the city’s tallest building, which is hard to imagine when visiting the city today. The perfect time to visit the hotel is around 4pm or 5pm before it gets dark.
The cocktails are a bit more experience than most other venues in the city, but compared to Danish prices it is still affordable and definitely worth it.
Air 360 Sky Lounge

Air 360 Sky Lounge har en af byens bedste udsigter udover hele Ho Chi Minh City. De laver nogle virkelig lækre cocktails og så har de happy hour hver dag fra kl. 17.30 – 20.00, hvor man får 50% rabat på nogle udvalgte cocktails. I Happy Hour perioden giver man omkring 30 kroner for en cocktail.
I weekenderne efter kl. 22.00 danner stedet rammen om en af byens mest populære natklubber, med en super fed international atmosfære.
English: Air 360 Sky Lounge is a sky-bar with one of the best views overlooking Ho Chi Minh City. They make really good cocktails and everyday from 5.30pm until 8pm they celebrate ‘Happy Hour’ with 50% off on selected cocktails.
In the weekends after 10pm the venue turns in to a very popular nightclub with an international atmosphere.
QUI LOUNGE

Jeg synes, at Champagneflaskerne plejer at fylde rigeligt på de Københavnske natklubber, men det er ingen ting i forhold til mængden af flasker, der fylder borderne på Qui Bar i weekenderne. Om man kan lide det eller ej, så er det super sjovt sted at opleve de enorme kontraster byen gemmer på.
På Qui Bar servere de cocktails i verdensklasse (lige med undtagelse af når de kører ‘Ladys night,’ og deler gratis drinks ud til alle piger. De drinks er ikke imponerende.) Kommer du inden midnat, har du også mulighed for at spise på Qui, hvor menukortet består af en masse små retter i god kvalitet.
Vietnamesernes musiksmag er generelt meget hård techno – det er ikke lige min musiksmag, men på QUI er musikken mere blød house og RnB. Bestemt et besøg værd!
English: Looking for an international lounge, restaurant and nightclub in Ho Chi Minh City? Qui Lounge it is. In the weekend the the Vietnamese jetset meets here to drink champagne and party. Whether you like this kind of prestige/luxuries bar or not, it is super fun place to experience the huge contrasts the city is hiding.
At Qui Bar, they serve world-class cocktails (except when they run ‘Ladys night,’ and serve free drinks for all girls. Those drinks are not impressive.) If you arrive before midnight, you also have the option of eating at Qui, where the menu consists of a lot of small dishes of good quality.
Most Vietnamese people love very hard techno – it’s not really what I like, but at QUI the music is more soft house and RnB. Definitely worth a visit!
Layla – Eatery & Bar

Layla er en af mine favoritter – hvis ikke min favorit nummer ét bar i Ho Chi Minh City. De servere i hvertfald uden tvivl byens bedste cocktails og priserne er meget fair. På Layla har de Happy Hour hver dag fra kl. 17.00 – 20.00.
Atmosfæren er international og ‘underground’ og musikken er stortest kun gammel 90’er musik, der har fået et kram et uptempo-beat. Lige noget for mig 😉 Deres personale er også super servicemindet – i hvert fald det meste af tiden.
Deres man er god, hvis du er sulten efter en snack, men jeg vil ikke anbefale dig, at spise aftensmad her. I stedet vil jeg anbefale dig at prøve mine to favorit cocktails fra menuen ‘Pornstar Martini’ og den mere klassiske ‘Amaretto Sour.’ Dem laver de begge to til perfektion.
English: Layla is one of my favorite – if not my number one favorite bar in Ho Chi Minh City. They serve the best cocktails that I have had in Ho Chi Minh City and the price is fair. The atmosphere is ‘underground’ and ‘international’ the music is mostly old american og european music from the 90’s and the staff is super serviceminded (most of the time.)
The food is good if you just want to have a snack, but I don’t recommend you to go here for dinner. My favorite cocktails on the menu is ‘Pornstar Martini’ and the more classic one ‘Amaretto Sour.’ Both of them they make with accuracy.
